This is similar to how babies learn to understand and say words -- they start off memorizing what the words sound like and what they mean. Toddlers naturally figure out grammar by figuring out the patterns of the spoken language without being told the rules of grammar. It is possible for babies and toddlers to figure out the patterns of the written language after learning to read many individual words.
